How Many Bathroom Types Do You Know?

When buying, selling, or remodeling a house, you need to know the various bathroom types. While the number of bathrooms in a home is significant, you also need to know the types. This information helps determine how many people a property can accommodate or how much money is necessary for remodeling.

We’ll discuss different types of bathrooms and explain the criteria for the distinction.

Bathroom elements

Four key elements distinguish different bathroom types: toilet, sink, bathtub, and shower. Each piece represents a quarter, which is why we have quarter-bathrooms, half-bathrooms, three-quarter bathrooms, and full bathrooms.

We often use decimals to express the bathroom types. Therefore, 0.25 represents a quarter-bathroom, 0.50 a half-bathroom, and 0.75 a three-quarter bathroom.

Different bathroom types

Now that we’ve discussed the criteria for distinction, let’s review the bathroom types:

Quarter-bathrooms

Quarter-bathrooms are usually small rooms with only a toilet or a shower stall. This bathroom type is often called a utility toilet or a utility shower. Although quarter-bathrooms take up a small amount of space and have only one key component, they can be very convenient, especially for larger families.

Such bathrooms are usually installed in basements or lower levels of homes for easier access.

Half-bathrooms

A half-bathroom typically contains a toilet and sink. Such bathrooms can also have a sink and shower. They are often called powder rooms or guest bathrooms and are on the middle levels of homes. Half-bathrooms are perfect for those that don’t have access to other bathrooms in the house.

Half-bathrooms usually take up between 18 and 24 square feet.

Three-quarter bathrooms

These bathrooms have a toilet, sink, and shower (or a bathtub). These bathrooms are often spare bathrooms or a part of an ensuite.

Depending on the layout, they usually take up around 35 square feet or more. Three-quarter bathrooms typically offer decent storage space.

Full bathrooms

Full bathrooms contain a toilet, sink, shower, and bathtub. These bathrooms can also feature a shower-bathtub combination. The bathtub needs to have a lower faucet and a higher shower head in such cases.

Full bathrooms are at least 40 square feet, but they can be much larger. Besides having plenty of storage space, these bathrooms often add value to a property. However, full bathrooms are usually relatively expensive to remodel.
