Colonial Heights is located in southeast Virginia, in the Tri-Cities area of the Richmond Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA), and is home to nearly 17,500 people. It is situated north of the Appomattox River and the south of Chesterfield County.
The town is the pride of its residents and is famous across America due to its rich cultural heritage and significant historical significance. The Brick House, a historic landmark of Colonial Heights, was constructed in 1685 and is now the oldest permanent building in the area.
On the north of the Appomattox River, the Violet Bank is a Virginia Historic Landmark and the first recorded settlement in Colonial Heights dating to 1775. The mansion was the headquarters for General Robert E. Lee during the Civil War and now serves as a museum for the historic event.
Although the town was originally a part of Chesterfield County, it was a significant part of modern American history since it was the battleground for the American Revolution and the Civil War. In 1926, Colonial Heights was designated a town and became a city in 1948.
In the early ages, the Colonial Heights area was inhabited by the Algonquin Tribe, and British colonists moved into the area in 1620. Settlers preferred the location because of the proximity to the Appomattox River and the fertile soil for agriculture.
